Anora

This was an astonishing film, with performances that were written by adults for adults, which is so refreshing in today's world of American film. They actually showed nudity, they actually showed people having sex, they showed that not everybody in America is prudish, which was so wonderful and it's something that Hollywood just can't wrap its tiny little mind around. You knew this had to be a an independent production, you knew that this wasn't financed by a big studio, because the content was simply too mature, and too adult like.

The interaction between Mikey Madison and Paul Weissman was precious. He played this gentle, kind-hearted thug, stuck working for a junk family, who did a great job of displaying the moral bankruptcy of the average billionaire, much less Russian oligarch. Mikey Madison was pitch perfect and absolutely deserved the Academy Award. It was a brilliant performance, the entire film had this pitch and intensity that just never let up and it was both tragic and beyond belief for many many sustained moments. Sean Baker likewise deserved his Oscar as the direction was flawless. This was an utterly enjoyable film to watch. Core to all of this is Madison’s incredible performance as Ani, who’s jaded enough to know that the world doesn’t typically give opportunities like this to girls like her without significant strings attached, but is still young and naive enough to hope what Vanya’s offering her is real. Her tough-as-nails resilience masks deep vulnerability that breaks your heart in the moments it comes to the surface. Her intense commitment, which never feels labored, is the stuff of instant legend, instinctual and natural on the level of Gena Rowlands’ work in John Cassavetes’ movies. She was totally invested in this very gutsy performance. Baker’s subtly brilliant film knows how difficult it is to pull yourself up by your bootstraps, especially when those bootstraps are constantly being cut off by the people at the top.
